America's School Shooting Ritual
The next steps are predictable
CNN reports on a school shooting at a K-12 school in Madison, WI:
Two people are dead after a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, police said, updating earlier accounts of the shooting. The suspect is also dead and multiple people are injured, according to authorities.
What happens next will play out according to a predictable script.
It will look something like what happened after a school shooting at a private school in Nashville in 2023:
Lawmakers, many of whom are beholden to the gun lobby, will make statements. Other lawmakers who want meaningful change will also make statements.
Then, no new laws will be passed and no real changes will be made.
Maybe, as in Tennessee, schools will be outfitted with bullet-resistant film over their windows.
And there will be drills.
And then it will all happen again.
When and where are unknown.
