Tennessee’s two U.S. Senators, Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty, have essentially admitted they are useless as evidenced by their response to a school shooting in Nashville on Monday that claimed the lives of three students (all age 9) and three adult staff members.
Rather than suggesting action that would restrict access to the type of assault weapons used in Monday’s killing and in so many other mass shooting deaths, the two suggested that schools become even more fortified.
Here’s more from Chattanooga’s Newschannel9:
United States Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty say they will introduce the Securing Aid for Every (SAFE) School Act to the U.S. Senate.
Senator Blackburn says the SAFE Act will unlock a $900 million grant program for both public and private schools. If passed, the legislation would allow for schools to use the funding for the training and hiring of veterans and former law enforcement officers. The law would allow for these hires to serve as school security officers. The money could also go towards hiring off duty law enforcement and tightening of schools' physical security.
Umm?!
Seriously!?
It’s as if Blackburn and Hagerty care more about their NRA donors than about kids.
In fact, it IS exactly that.
The price of a completely unrestricted Second Amendment is that our kids (and their teachers) are going to school every single day as sitting ducks.
I’m a parent.
I remember when our school system added SROs.
Then they added a “fortified” front entrance.
Blackburn and friends would add MORE security measures - they would do anything BUT restrict access to the weapons our culture fetishizes.
Let me be clear: If your policy solution to kids and teachers dying at schools from firearms does not address the issue of easy access to firearms, YOU are not serious.
Blackburn and Hagerty are not alone in their cowardice.
Tennessee’s Lt. Governor has also released a list of proposals that would do nothing to restrict access to guns - though it may make him feel better about his bad decisions on gun policy.
