Federal court grants injunction, allows local school board to act as lawsuit proceeds
A state board slated to begin oversight of Shelby County Schools will have to wait to take action, a federal judge says.
Shelby County government sued the state seeking to prevent the planned takeover and turn key decisions over to an unelected board appointed by GOP politicians.
WREG-TV in Memphis reports a judge ruled the state board must wait to take any action while the lawsuit plays out.
A temporary restraining order has been approved in the federal lawsuit filed by Shelby County over the state’s takeover of local schools.
The order preserves the status quo, meaning that Memphis-Shelby County School Board can continue making emergency purchases, paying contracts and keeping current leadership in place for now.
A federal judge will have to decide whether those protections would remain in place as the lawsuit moves forward.
