Public Education Advocate Eyes Indiana Governor's Race
Former Republican State School Superintendent explores Democratic bid for Hoosier state's highest office
Former Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick is reportedly considering a bid for Governor of the Hoosier state. McCormick, elected to statewide office as a Republican, this time says if she runs, it’ll be as a Democrat.
WTHR reports:
McCormick's term ended at the beginning of 2021. Dr. Katie Jenner, who was appointed by Holcomb, became secretary of education in McCormick's place.
McCormick told 13News she has established an exploratory committee that has been filed publicly and she's considering a run for governor as a Democrat.
McCormick has an active Twitter presence and frequently tweets about public education issues in Indiana.
McCormick may also be emboldened by the victory of pro-public education candidate Katie Hobbs in Arizona. In a state with a history of GOP leadership and a strong move toward vouchers, Hobbs claimed victory over Kari Lake - a candidate who promised to continue Arizona’s move toward full privatization of public education.
